[Zhining Hu] Response 02

In "A Glimpse and a Hook", the writer values a person’s professional experience and his commitment the most. Education and skills does not appear to be as important because they can be reflected by going over your work experience and what responsibilities you have undertaken. However, it differs from what is written in “Build the Resume Employers Want” since Longino and Calhoun are both college recruiter. Education only became less important after you have various job experiences to talk about. As a recently graduated college student with little work experience, your impression will still be dependent on your school, your degree and your major. Having some specialties that attract the eye is pointed out in both articles, but is something easier said than done. Showing personality among thousands of competitors while still staying focused on being professional is just hard.

I would like to talk more about the comments provided in the assignment of “A Glimpse and a Hook”. It might be true that many companies will hire him as he can bring skills X, Y, Z to the table. However, you definitely won’t find the fabulous world leading companies among those who are willing to hire him. Nor will you find HR managers who are seeking for a trustable, high-position supervisor considering him as a candidate after looking at his resume. The person might be skilled and full of job experiences but I believe that even at a glimpse, an experienced recruiter will have a sense of his low commitment and even his awful attitude. Just as the writer of “A Glimpse and a Hook" said, he is constantly on the look for warning flags and inconstancies.

Take Google who is always in the forefront of Fortune magazine’s “100 Best Companies to Work For” for example. They spent way more budget on their work environment and employee’s benefit than most companies do, and I believe that it shows how much they value the atmosphere of their company. Companies like that will take your resume seriously and not hire you just simply because you provide the skills. Not to mention that with such fierce competition in the job market nowadays, there will be plenty of people equipped with skills even better than yours. Therefore, you must try to exceed in every way you can, including writing a good resume. Taking your resume seriously is not just a must but also a display of your personal attitude.
