Suizi Xiao - Job Market Research

As far as I am considered, finding a job is not only for making someone’s living, but also it helps reaching someone’s goal. My major is accounting, while I am also interested in engineering, biochemistry, and design. I also self studied some basic courses of electronic engineering, chemistry, and visual editing technique. Therefore, I prefer to take an accountant job in those kinds of companies or organizations rather than find a job in professional accounting firms. Meanwhile, I can learn variety kinds of knowledge from other people there. I searched job advertisements on Monster (www.monster.com) and selected four of them. Two of them are located in the United States; the others are in my hometown, China.

Companies inside the United States:

Bloom Energy

Swarovski

Organizations in China:

Ministry of Environmental Protection of the People’s Republic of China

GE Energy (China)

The basic standard minimum requirements of those two job markets seem similar. All those four organizations require a bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance; work experiences within the typical field; organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills; self-motivated; and Microsoft Office skills required. Of course, there are differences since the different culture backgrounds. The requirements of US companies are more specific and definite. They clearly indicate that applicant needs to get CPA or MBA certification. One also asks for the knowledge of SEC rules, PRC, and US GAAP accounting procedures. The academic qualification requirement seems higher than the Chinese companies. With the development of world communication, Chinese people pay more attention on international foresight. They ask applicant to handle at least one foreign language. Take GE Energy as an example. It is actually a US company, which expand its business to other countries such as China. Those overseas-funded enterprises have their unique requirements, such like good communication skills with internal and external customers.

About the compensation packages, of course, the US has higher standard of living than China. In general, the salaries and health insurances of US companies are better than regular Chinese business companies. However, the Chinese organization I selected is actually a government ministry. As for government officer, although the salary is not that high, the one hundred percent health insurance is no longer a problem. The reason why I would like to find a job in America is the better economic system. I would have more chance to learn advanced business strategies. Moreover, people here pay more attention on teamwork. The sense of community is my shortcoming, so I would like to improve myself.

Two of the companies that I select are aimed for public service. Bloom and GE provide electronic products for the public use as well as families. Both of those energy companies are trying to help people live a better and convenient life. Swarovski, as most people know about, intent to be the world best jewelry-making company on top of fashion. The Ministry of Environment Protection of China is different. It formulates rules and strategies, and then assigns them to other organizations. It’s not a profit-seeking organization. After all, it also intends to build a harmony society.
