Job Ad Analysis

1. I decided to analyze the job advertisement regarding retail buyer of Adidas women apparel. Before I saw the advertisement, I had already done some research on the company background. On the 18th of August1949, Adidas was registered as a company, named by its founder Adolf Dassler. For over 40 years, the adidas AG has been manufacturing state-of-the-art sports footwear, apparel and accessories. During the 1990s, Adidas switched from a manufacturing and sales based company to a marketing company under the management of the CEO Robert Louis-Dreyfus. Today, the adidas Group is a global leader in the sporting goods industry and offers a broad spectrum of consumer products.
2. The company has a website which describes the development of Adidas and its future direction. The URL is http://www.adidas-group.com/en/home/welcome.aspx. The Adidas group always tries their best to serve as a model for sporting goods industries by adhereing to five principles. First of all, the cooperation is consumer focused and therefore they continuously improve the quality, look, feel and image of their products to satisfy consumers‘ specific needs with the highest value. Secondly, there should be innovation and design leaders who seek to help athletes achieve optimum performance with every sporting good introduced to the market. In addition, they are a global organization that is socially and environmentally responsible, creative and financially rewarding for their employees and shareholders. One of their ultimate goals of the company is to continuously strengthen the reputation and products to improve their competitive position and financial performance.
3. I have seen dedication and commitment appearing for several times. A statement such as [I will utilize my educational and practical experience to contribute to the success of the team.] will show that you commit yourself to the company. According to their recruitment criteria, the employees that they look for should have passion, vision, competitiveness and humility, engrained into their way of life. When preparing for resume or cover letter, I will list experiences and talents that reflect those personalities.
4. Employers are looking for skills such as ability to identify and quantify sales opportunities and market trends, thorough understanding of retail math, ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Qualitative analysis is as important as quatitative analysis. Applicants should be able to understand and translate financial data to make recommendations and decisions. More importantly, employees should think strategically, synthesize complex data and develop innovative solutions for specific request. Experience with, and a thorough understanding of managing Open to Buy metrics is greatly favorable. From my point of view, crew members can learn from each other through discussion on retail knowledge and performance evaluation, but this can never be achieved unless each individual of the team possess the strong communication and presentation skills necessary for effective sharing of ideas.Soft skills such as time management, stress handling, conflict solving and personal assessment should not be overlooked because they are crucial for the success in any retail careers.

1. I just recently became aware of this company while I was searching for financial-related companies for my summer internship this year. I have always been interested in well-known international companies that had corporate branches in Korea, and this could be why I have never heard of this company, Independent Capital Management (ICM).

2. Yes, ICM does have a website (www.icmfinancial.com). The website states that ICM was founded with a philosophy of providing independent financial advice not only to certain groups, but also to individuals, families, and businesses. ICM was formed when employers began letting employees to manage their own retirement plan due to the weakening social security system and unstable banks in the united states. Their business purpose was to help those in need of building a realiable retirement plans.

3. ICM's job posting on Monsters has a list of qualifications which focuses on ethical, energetic, and hard-working employees. My experience in the korean army for two years have allowed me to work hard on daily tasks while keeping the strict ethical standards that the organization imposed. Two-year military service isn't something anyone can endure, and I believe such experience can show my abilities to fulfill ICM's qualifications which I can express on my resume. Most importantly, ICM is currently seeking for applicants who have relevant educational background in financial counseling, and my concentration in financial counseling and planning fits well for this position.

4. ICM has mentioned in both their job posting on Monsters and also their company website that they look for potential employees who have good communication and mathematical skills. Although these skills are necessary, I personally think the communication skill is most important for working in this company. The major financial services that are offered by ICM includes retirement planning, investment advisory services, estate planning, and other financial-related advisory which require lots of contacts with the customers. The communication skill is vital, because before applying any expert skills such as computing and interpreting data, person providing advice to their client should first understand and assess client's situation from communicating with their clients.

Omar Muasher - Job Ad Analysis

1. Did you know anything about the company before you saw the job advertisement? If so, what?

Yes, I knew that Bank of America is a financial services company that is on of the ‘Big Four Banks” along with Citigroup, JP Morgan Chase and Wells Fargo. Bank of America is one of the largest companies in the United States. Another thing I knew about Bank of America before seeing the job advertisement is its acquisition of Merrill Lynch in 2008 after the financial market collapse.

2. Does the company have a website? What is the url? What does the website suggest about the company’s personality or philosophy?

The company does have a website which covers a broad scope of things from online banking to learning more about the company. Its URL is https://www.bankofamerica.com/. The company philosophy talks about grant programs, associate commitment and philanthropic management. They aim to satisfy both their customers and their employees by employing a comfortable work setting as well as providing exceptional customer service. The company also encourages donations to charity and according to their website each year volunteers of the company donate more than 900,000 hours to help meet community needs. This is the URL for the company’s philosophy page http://www.bankofamerica.com/foundation/.

3. What keywords are on the website/job advertisement that you can use in your resume and cover letter?

Since this is a financial services company, I would need to include work experience I have had in the related field. The keywords I might use are “strategic,” “risk management,” “P/L statements” and other technical terms. Other than the keywords required on my resume such as my major, education, work experience and the other elements that would target a financing job would include the use of words in describing such experiences. Showing confidence, development and insight in the use of words in job descriptions attracts the employer.

4. What skills is your prospective employer seeking? Which skills are the most important, in your opinion?

The prospective employer, like most companies, requires proficiency in written and communication skills. They look for attention to detail, academic achievement, strong work ethic, initiative, leadership and strategic and creative thinking among others. I believe that the most important skills are the exceptional communication skills that allow a person to speak their mind and reach out to others if they need direction. Strong work ethics as well as team focus are other characteristics needed for a prospective employee to possess, as they are essential to an effective work force for the company to achieve profits as well as maintain a healthy work setting.

1. I have been interested in getting into Kraft for some time. Previous to my research, I knew that the company bought DANONE’s biscuit (cookie) and cereal division in 2007 and CADBURY in early 2010. In addition, it was a TV show in 2008 that interviewed their newly appointed CEO of China, Lorna Davis, after the purchase of DANONE that inspired me to pursue a career in the food industry in the first place. Therefore, Kraft is definitely a company that I would be delighted to work in.

2. Yes, the company has a website. It’s http://www.kraftfoodscompany.com/home/index.aspx. Kraft believes that they make the brands people. No matter what the occasion, they take food to heart. Their higher purpose, make today delicious, is about much more than the products they make. It defines them, unites them and inspires them to make a delicious difference in the company, in the communities and in the world. They also believe that their people are their secret ingredient to success.

3. Kraft Foods recruits and expects motivated, active learners. Development is a career-long process and is most effective when it includes diverse experiences and focuses on doing the work of the organization.

4. They are looking for someone with a college degree with an educational background in logistics business logistics. They indicate that the person should have organizational ability, leadership skills and working knowledge of computer-related systems. The applicant must also be someone who is creative, patient and have an understanding of the consumer goods industry.

I think that among these qualifications, educational background in logistics business logistics and a great understanding of the consumer goods industry is more important.

Zhaoyi Wang-- Job Ad Analysis

1, Daiwa Securities Group Inc. is one of the biggest financing company in Japan. Also, it is the only private company doing microfinance investment in Japan. The company stresses the effect and eagerness of its CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) and microfinance bond is a part of their CSR.

2, URL for the company (http://www.jp.daiwacm.com/)

The basic foundation of the company is that finding out the possibility of the future through financing. Maybe we can see the similar sentence in the other companies website, however, the point I was attracted is the target of their investment is not only the historical financing world, but the field that other companies never think it could become a “business”. Microfinance bond or vaccine bond are the examples.

3, According to the advertisement, the job is concerning about asset evaluation. Therefore, I think I can stress that I took many finance course at Purdue. Besides, they have huge amount of branches overseas, for example London, Paris, New York, and Shanghai. Every employees are required to stay in the branches overseas for at least one year, so language skills might be included in the resume and cover letter.

4, They are seeking someone who has high motivation for financing and financial knowledge or language skills are desirable. However, they do not assume all applicants have finance skills because they will hold seminars for new coming employees to get the basics of financing. Therefore, in my opinion, the most important point they desire is the eagerness for the job.

1. Power Construction is a very old and stable company. They only perform work in greater Chicago area. I have known about Power Construction for about 3.5 years. Power Construction always attends to Building Construction Management (BCM) job fair and is a partner of BCM department.

2. Yes, Power Construction has a website like most other companies do since we live in the technology era. The url for the website is http://www.powerconstruction.net. Power Construction’s philosophy consists of five components. They are, Integrity: Trusting and long-term relationship with their customers, Excellence: Consistency and excellence creates loyalty, Teamwork: Shared achievement and prosperity for both the owner and Power Construction, Innovation: Being creative to grow, and finally Financial Stability: Optimize and measure financial risks for long-term security.

3. Power construction is getting more than 90% of its work from repeat clients. This clearly shows the company philosophy and policy, so the most important keywords I should have on my resume are “commitment” and “loyalty”.

4. Power construction website doesn’t necessarily show what they require from the students, but one quote I saw was “Anything can look good on paper, but need to experience it to confirm your passion.” As far as I experience the job fairs every company requires and first thing they as is whether if you had an internship or not. I think commitment is the most important skill for construction industry. If you don’t dedicate yourself to work, construction can become very frustrating.

Yerzhan Konysbayev-Job Ad Analysis

1) The job I chose among my 4 options is a Manager to Consulting Department, at Deloitte. Yes, I had some information about the company before I saw this advertisement. I know one guy who graduated from the same high school as me; he made a very good career in a quite short period at Deloitte. This probably encouraged me to find out more about the company. Before seeing the advertisement, I knew that Deloitte is international audit and consulting company which is thought to one of so called “Big four” audit companies.

2) Yes, it has a website. There is a very unusual and at the same time interesting kind of expression of company’s philosophy on their website. There is a three minute video of company’s CEO, Barry Salzberg. His speech is very motivational and empowering. He starts with his own experience, explaining how he was going to work at Deloitte for couple of years and then to switch to another place, but after he started working in Deloitte, he couldn’t leave that place because of the special atmosphere that existed there. What Barry Salzberg was delivering in his speech, is that Deloitte has a very professional approach and qualified workers. He explains that this fact is supported by respectable rankings.

http://www.deloitte.com/view/en_US/us/index.htm

3) I definitely qualify for degree they are requiring. They ask for Economics, Mathematics or Finance degrees, and I have Economics. Also, since this a managerial job and a lot of required skills say “to manage” something, I could indicate my concentration area of “business management” on a resume.

4) Since this is a job of a consultant, I think they are looking for people with strong analytical and problem solving skills. Also, I think one of the most important qualities they are looking for is an employee to be able concentrate deeply on their job.

[Yae Sam Song] - Job Ad Analysis

1. When I first saw the advertisement on monster, I knew nothing about this company because I believe it to be a private orthodontist. There was no link to their homepage or that gave information about the company. However, after seeing the website, it seems like a fairly famous company.

2. As stated before, the company does not have a URL or have a website linked on monster. Therefore, I have looked it up in Google and found their main website, available under http://www.soltes.com/. As I went through the website, I realized that this company’s main purpose was not the satisfaction of money, but it seemed like that they really concentrated on what is best for their patients. Everybody is aware of the fact how costly orthodontic services require. However, they even have financial specialists to work that out for you. This shows their personality and philosophy of how the money is not the major purpose of their business.

3. One keyword that I could use in my resume and cover letter is “accomplishment through effort”. This is because the work that is put into a patient requires a lot of effort. Without the effort of the orthodontist, a beautiful smile can not be accomplished. Another reason is that to become a doctor, one needs to put in a lot of effort. Without the effort of studying, one can not be a doctor. It is to tell you that accomplishment is only achieved through effort. Another keyword that I could use is “professionalism”. This keyword is the key to any of the jobs in the field of medicine or any health care. Being a professional is the key to success and it is related with the first keyword as one becomes professional by accomplishing things through effort.

4. Being an assistant does not mean that an employee does not require a lot of responsibility. In fact, every person needs to be responsible of the fact that they are performing a practice involving other human beings. Therefore, a lot skills are required that are related to the field of dentistry and orthodontics. One needs to have knowledge in Orthodontics technology, infection control, patient services, and use of medical technology. A lot of the skills require experience and knowledge as one need to be responsible for another human being. In easy words the employee needs cleaning, maintaining, and welcoming skills. All these attributes are especially important to make a person a perfect candidate for this job.

1. Yes, I did. Bank of China is the biggest bank in China, the bank served consecutively as the country's central bank. It is one of the most important banks in China and served for over seventy percent of people in China. If I can get a position in International Business Contact in Bank of China, the salary might be six thousands at least per month which is about eight hundred dollars per month. This is not a lot but after three months the salary may increase, it is a stable job and this would be an excellent work experience for my future.

2. Bank of China’s Global Website is http://www.bank-of-china.com/en/index.html , Bank of China has upheld spirit of “pursuing excellence” roughout its near hundred-year history..

3. “Diversified”, “domestic and overseas businesses”, “Risk management”, “Major in Finance, Economics or English”. I chose these words because I will finish my Bachelor’s degree in USA and I know what is “diversity” very well; I am majoring Finance and English is my second language, also, I am very interested in risk management and I may choose this as my major in my Graduate School.

4. The employer is looking for someone who have strong major background relates to domestic and international business and financial marketing, and people who are honest, good communication skills and teamwork skills; great English skills. Personally, “people who have strong major background relates to domestic and international business and financial marketing” should be the most important requirements for candidates, because if you don’t have enough knowledge for this job, you can never do it well.

Information Technology Internship of Principal Financial Group
1. Before reading the job advertising, I know Principal is one of the top financial companies in the United States. It provides retirement plans and health care.
2. The company’s website is http://www.principal.com/index.shtm. The website suggests Principal is a leading global financial company offering a wide range of financial products and services. The company focuses on small and medium-sized businesses and global asset management. It values and respects each of its employee’s individuality. For the social responsibility, Principal supports the community by sharing its time and resources, and strives to protect the environment for future generations.
3. Keywords: “Preference for applicants in the process of completing an undergraduate or graduate degree.”
4. My prospective employer is seeking applicants with learning skills, exposure to the field of IT, and communication skills. In my opinion, the learning skill is the most important, because the company lists “Preference for applicants in the process of completing an undergraduate or graduate degree” first, as a qualification.

Nornazira-Job Ad Analysis

Actuarial Analyst

I came to know about this company from my friend who did his internship over the last two years summer break. It is a well-known and one of the largest financial service in the world which the core business and focus is insurance.  As a world financial service, it's covering more than 70 countries and employing over 181,000 people.

There are numbers of website for the Allianz company as it is a worldwide company. For Malaysia branch, the url is https://www.allianz.com.my/cls/. On the main page, it highlights it's core business which is insurance where it says "Allianz. Insurance solutions from A-Z". The company is committed in providing financial services for Malaysians need. The philosophy of the company is "The leadership values" and "3+one strategy". Both are important keys to develop and execute a quality performance for the customers and also the shareholders.

The possible keywords that I can use in my resume and cover letter are talented, highly motivated analytical, problem solving skills, active team player, and highly committed. Looking at the company philosophy, keywords like performance, consistent, diversity and culture will add more essence to the resume and cover letters.

The skills that the employee is seeking are proficient in Microsoft Excel, strong analytical and problem solving skills, fluent in both written and spoken English, and experience in general insurance work. For me, the most important skill will be strong analytical and problem solving skills where this skill can be applied with the proficiency in Microsoft Excel. Besides, as the Alianz is "Insurance solutions from A-Z", this skill is highly needed to deliver the service.

1. No, I didn't know anything about this company at all. I chose this job advertisement because I like the job they offered, investment analyst. It only requires Bachelor's Degree and with working experience less than 1 year.

The philosophy of this company is to provide useful investment information to clients and assist clients to succeed in investment. 3. The key words that I can use in my resume and cover letter are flexiblity, ability to perform a responsible and complex functions, ability to use of independent judgement, keen interest in financial markets, and strong problem solving skills.

4. My prospective employer is seeking employee who has Bachelor's Degree in finance or other business related fields with good finance background knowledge, strong analytical and problem solving skills, excellent spoken and written communication skills, computer skills, etc. I think among these skills the most important skills needed for this job is analytical skills, because to make right decisions it is important to analyze data correctly.

[Suizi Xiao] - Job Ad Analysis

Among those four job advertisements that I chose in the first assignment, I prefer to focus on the Ministry of Environmental Protection of the People’s Republic of China. It locates in Beijing, my hometown, so that I can take care of both my career and my families.
1. Yes, the Ministry of Environmental Protection is part of official government organizations. I can always hear of its latest news from TV or other media. Otherwise, my mother works there. It’s a non-profit seeking organization directly run by Chinese government for environmental project, pollution control, and nuclear safety. Nowadays, people around the world pay more attention on environmental problem, which makes it a hot spot in current Chinese society.
2. The official web set for MEP is http://www.mep.gov.cn/, where there is additional English version at http://english.mep.gov.cn/. The MEP usually shows its work tasks to the public through this website for social supervision. The MEP aims to develop and organize the implementation of national policies and plans for environmental protection, draft laws and regulations, and formulate administrative rules and regulations for environmental protection. Overall, together with other government departments, it regulates the public administration as well as helping people live a better live.
3. The keywords on the website that can help me build my resume are “responsibility”, “moral conduct”, and “professional”. I’m looking for an accountant job; it also requires bachelor degree, CPA, ACP, and CFP certification like other companies. However, I think it is more important to blend myself into its special philosophy. Not only should I do well in the specialized accounting field, but also I need to be a righteous person. On the other hand, the preferential treatment would be given to someone who has related job experience. While I have already taken internship there several times before. That may contribute a lot to my resume and cover letter.
4. Of course, the accounting skills including auditing, financial and tax management are basic requirements. As for the MEP, which has many subordinate units related around the country, the organizational and coordinative skills are very important for all of its employees.

1.
Yes, I did. I knew many things about the MIRAE-ASSET financial group before I saw the job advertisement. I knew this company because MIRAE-ASSET is leading financial service group not only in Korea but in Asia. My parents also have a private asset manager in this company, so I had an opportunity to meet private asset manager last year to talk about the investment plan. MIRAE-ASSET was established by Hyunju PARK who is known for legendary personnel investor in Korea. He established MIRAE-ASSET in 1997 and revolutionized the fund management industry with introduction of portfolio investment principles in Korea. Back then, there was an Asian financial crisis, so every investor was in panic. But by his foresight, he made a lot of money on the stock market and has developed MIRAE-ASSET as one of the world’s largest investor in Emerging market.
2.
MIRAE-ASSET financial group has a website.
Following is the url of the company: http://www.miraeasset.com/main/index.do
According to the business philosophy on the website, it says “We value our people and embrace the future with an open mind.” To establish company’s business philosophy, they propose Clients first, Objectivity, Team play, and Citizenship as the core values of MIRAE-ASSET financial group. For the vision part, it says “As emerging market experts, we contribute to our clients’ successful investment management and help people prepare for a secure retirement.”
3.
I think that resume and cover letter should be much related to company’s philosophy, vision, core values and investment principles on the website.
I can use keywords such as objectivity, team play, citizenship, emerging market, building on principles, and future with an open mind.
4.
First of all, knowledge of financial market is important. I got two U.S. actuary certifications and be planned to get two more before apply the job. So I think these Licenses can well prove my ability to work in this field. Computer skill is also important. Since most of the task in financial market use statistical program to find out useful information, computer skill is essential to get a job. Sociability can be another important factor. It is little bit awkward to say as a skill, but sociability is important qualification to work well with others. We can’t work alone in work place. All people take their parts and need to communicate constantly with other people to work perfectly. In this reason, sociability is important.

[Jun Kwon] - Job Ad Analysis

This is the job/company I have been considering to get a position for past few years. I know many people who have applied or going to apply for the exact same position among people in my major. FAA is federal government organization governs United States and other parts of the world’s aviation rules and regulation. FAA is an operating mode of U.S Department of Transportation.

FAA does have a website, www.faa.gov it is a bit dry and boring compare to many other private company’s recruiting pages, however it contains lots of detail and through information is available for anyone to look up. The website even has detail breakdown for a new hire, current industry workers, and even for civilians who might have questions about general aviation knowledge.

One of the easiest place to look up their key value points are on Missions& vision page. FAA mission is to provide safest, most efficient aerospace system in the world, and reaching next level of safety. Their vision mentions again about safety and efficiency, with addition of environmental responsibility, and global leadership. This could sound very vague, however considering without safety and efficient work environment, nobody will want to fly ever again. Some of their key values are excellence, integrity, diversity, collaboration, and Innovation.

The although it is not written on the job ad, it requires the graduation certificate from FAA nominated CTI program schools, and have efficient English communication skills, computer knowledge, willing to work as a group, and high level of stress management.

Seong Taek Kim - Job Ad Analysis

The the job ads that I linked on the previous post, have problems and are not appearing on the webpages for some reason so I post a new job ad

job ad

1. I couldn't have known about the company because I was looking for internships or assisting jobs in a pursuit of potential self-improvement. So the companies did not matter as long as I saw things to learn in the job.

2. JMG Financial Group- As the goal of the company is to manage and sustain clients' wealth, the company seems to focus primarily on the quality of services provided to clients. I am assuming that the company is very strict about abilities of employees to perform the services, because managing one's equity is not something you can take easily. Such skills require a lot of trainings and experiences to be mastered. So I believe that when the company looks for recruiments, the employers will be the most interested in the education history and work experiences rather than personalities that enhance working environment to work with.

3. The keyword here is "wealth management" It applies to my college major "Financial counseling and planning" I believe that most college offer degrees in business but most colleges do not offer specified degree field as "Financial counseling and planning" like Purdue University offers. Therefore, I think that the best way to appeal myself to the company is my education history.

4. As mentioned right above, the company seeks to hire people with great finance managing skills to meet the clients' satisfaction. This job is highly sensitive to the quality of work performed. If such plans go wrong, the entire life or the whole retirement plans can go wrong. Therefore, the financial management skills are vital to the company and the fact that I am majoring in the field will be strongest point on the resume.

Jongyoeb Kim (JK) - Job Ad Analysis

1. The Amazon Inc is very popular retail seller through internet (named “E-tailer”). Not only that, Amazon is also making electric goods such as kindles. Due to its low price of goods, Amazon became a huge competitor of other big companies like EBay Inc, Barnes & Noble Inc, and Apple Inc. If you are living in the states, it would be nearly impossible for one to not hear about Amazon or not buy goods from Amazon.

2. Yes, Amazon has a website. It would be impossible to stay in business for Amazon, if it has no website. It uses website to advertise and sell goods; http://www.amazon.com/. For me, I looked at the career website for Amazon. There I was able to find out that, as a Fortune 500 company, Amazon was focusing on technological innovation to offer customers with more types of products more conveniently and at even lower prices. This is exactly in the hands of supply chain manager (which is my major); finding out ways to reduce costs of goods by managing the routes of inputs and efficiently delivering the outputs to the customers.

3. The most important keyword I can write on my resume is “minimize”. Like I said, supply chain management is essentially a key to reduce cost of a company only by selecting cheapest (but efficient and qualitative) way to get materials needed to produce such products. Hence, it is to “minimize” everything; it is to minimize costs of transportation, costs of materials, and essentially to “minimize” customers’ unhappiness of company’s product.

4. One of the most important skills needed to take an internship opportunity the Amazon gives is being familiar with supply chain management concepts such as forecasting, planning, optimization, and logistics. I personally believe that internship is an opportunity to develop this awareness. Being a student of Krannert School of management at Purdue University would provide me an excellent academic education needed in my field. However, education itself would not give me a real experience in my field. Hence, this is the main reason why I wish to take an internship at Amazon to attain experience and build my awareness of supply chain management to be in a better shape for future.

Zhaoyi Wang Response 2

For "A Glimpse and a Hook", I was surprised because he said he does not read cover letter or pay less attention to what skills the appliers have. In Japan, people who are seeking jobs usually think that the most important part in your resume is the skill part. I think it is because companies think it does not matter what university you graduated from, and what is important is skills that is effective in the real world. It also might be true in US. However, according to the article, I feel that what we are expected is to show what you did in your lives rather than just skills or qualifications.

For “Build the Resume Employers Want”, I think this is the standard guidance for how to write your resumes. It describes how to show yourselves good to companies you applied to. For example, according to educations or skills, it said that you should include your GPA if you have 3 or more or even it’s lower than 3, it is ok if you have strong experience.

The first article was very impressive and new for me because it shows what I thought important is completely different but the second one was closer to my knowledge about resume. I think the contents of the first one are true. We should describe what we really did in our resume. But still I feel comfortable to follow the second one because I think it is more acceptable in the whole job market.

Zhao Huang--Response 2

In the essay “A Glimpse and a Hook”, the author talked about the process how he goes through people’s resume. He described each step as his thinking changes, and what key words can grab his attention. I never think about what the recruiters think about me when they read my resume, this essay is very interesting to me because the author wrote this like a short story. One thing to mention is that how much they care about the “company names”, the author said, “Do I recognize any companies that you worked at? If I do, I don’t look at what you actually do; I assume that if I recognize the company, I’m in the ballpark.” Personally, it’s an unfair way to decide whether the recruiters want to hire the candidates. There are a lot of people would like to work in small companies and gain more opportunities and experiences. Maybe you can think of it in this way, because the big companies selected this people, they must be good candidate for our company. But that’s not the truth, because different companies need different kinds of people, unless the recruiters think this company is similar with theirs, the “company names” is not helpful to know the candidates well.

In Barbara Mulligan’s “Build the Resume Employers Want”, the author talked about how to write a good resume and what kind of resume the recruiters prefer. It is a useful essay to me because Barbara does not talk about the resume in a general; it is really specific like what would go first and what should be put on the resume. The ideas about “objective” are very effective to me:“Feit says. “The more specific it is, the better. Then we’re able to route the resume to the appropriate people”. Most resumes I read only have one short sentence like “To find a full time job in the finance field.” it is very general and I never think I should write a specific objective, but now I may do so. In addition, the order we usually put on the resume is “education” before “experience”, but “Calhoun says she likes to see the section listing a student’s work experience placed above the education category”. It really surprises me since I think “education” is the most important part of me as a candidates, I may keep the original order since it is safer.

“A Glimpse and a hook” and “Build the Resume Employers Want” both give me a better understanding about how HR people review resumes. The first article is more critical, and supersized me more. It is not supersize that job history is the priority Michael cornered. What supersized me are that he skip a lot of things and the role of interests. “Skills”, which seems very important, is not Michael’s concern. I agree with his opinion that job experience is more reliable in term of judge a person’s skill. “Build the Resume Employers Want” is on a sales position perspective. Compare to Michael’s focus on engineering experience, Barbara more focus on sales experience. She suggests students to put their experiences prior to their education background.
Both of the two articles give me a perspective from employers to resumes and perfect directions for my resume.

All this while, I will google the perfect sample of resumes in order to impress the recruiter. After reading "A Glimpse and a Hook", he did not inspire me to write a perfect resume at all. Most of what I think is right for the resumes is totally the opposite from his perspective. Somehow I think he's being pessimist with all the applicants. Like he said in the summary of qualification, "Similar to Skills, this is another skip section for me. Here’s a good example from an imaginary resume". For me, not all candidates will write a "creative resume" just to impress the reader on the first place. I guess his thought in the article is just a way of him to complain and be fussy to his job after seeing pile of resumes to be reviewed.

On the other hand, Barbara gives me another insight to build a good resume. A company might have a different requirement for each vacancy. Therefore, a recruiter will just skip certain part that's not pertaining to the job available. This article is a mash up of what other recruiters also think. So, not all recruiters will be like Radsin. After reading this article, we should write a resume that includes qualifications that we can offer to sit for the job. Radsin might say he will be bored seeing the same layout for every resume he review, but a specific layout for a resume will actually give an idea to the applicants to write a resume that is readable to recruiter.

As a senior I have heard many different things about preparing resumes, how much effort I should be putting, how important using the buzzwords are. I think these two articles are very different from each other. The article “Build the Resume Employers Want” talks about important facts that are accepted by most of the career centers. It talks about how one should be very straightforward with the objective rather than talking about the future plans. This article mainly talked about the general information on how to build a resume. One thing I learned from this article that I should consider putting my honors, and rewards under the experience section.

The next article “A Glimpse and a Hook” however, talks more about the sections of resumes that are actually more important to recruiters. This article has made me think about making many changes on my resume, because I experienced the examples that the author gave. The most important part of the article I believe was the 30 second habit that the author had. I was always told about this, but I actually never new people out there consider this as their rule.

The article “A Glimpse and a Hook” was more informative for me than the other article. I never thought about changing the style of my resume, or have different fonts for header and the rest. One thing I didn’t agree with the author was the unimportance of the skill part.

Omar Muasher - Response 02

In the article titled “Build the Resume Employers Want,” different recruiters talked about what they look for in a resume. Some preferred education to be placed at the top while others preferred work experience. What they both agreed on was that these elements of the resume need to be communicated clearly to the recruiter. The article told me things I already know about a resume, that it should be presented in a professional manner and include things like my name, address, email, etc. It also taught me to put more detail when writing about job experiences. It encouraged me to add some of my leadership roles to my work experiences to make my resume look more attractive.

The next article divides the elements of a resume into things they actually care about and things they don’t bother to read. It gives us helpful tips on what to stress on in a resume and how to go about it. It mainly targeted the resume from an engineer’s standpoint and showed us the importance of communicating yourself to a recruiter in the best way in such a limited amount of time. As the article says a recruiter takes on average 30 seconds to go through each resume, so that time should be used wisely and efficiently.

Both articles agreed on many things including the details of the job descriptions, the need for differentiation in styles and clarity of presentation. They differed in the fact that in “A Glimpse and a Hook” they said that the objective is useless and usually discarded in comparison to the article “Build the Resume Employers Want,” where a recruiter stated, “We like to see some kind of objective or summary statement.” They also disagreed about the skills section. The “Glimpse and a Hook” article said it should be incorporated into the job description while the other article noted that it could be placed at the top of a resume if it seems significant enough.

By reading the articles, I believe that those two authors both work for the ministry of personnel in their companies or organizations. Obviously, they gain much experience with reading others’ resumes. In the first reading named “A Glimpse and a Hook”, the author shares his viewpoints about resume as a “reviewer”, in other words, his tone sounds like an employer. He mainly talks about what an employer would like to see in applicants’ resumes. In his points of view, most words in others’ resumes are worthless, which he would definitely skip over. It’s cruel, but it’s reality. For instance, students, including myself, sometimes pay much attention on describing their education backgrounds and skills. However, the employer might not identify with those things. He would rather pay attention to someone’s job history. As what he said, “Your professional experience is the heart of your resume”. This really makes me a little bit nervous, because I only served several internship during vacations before. None of them can be considered as a real job. In China, study hard is the “main task” for students, parents and teachers might even blame you if you take a part time job. Even worse, I don’t have many chances to get a job in the US as an international student. Thus, I realize that my resume would only take him 10 seconds to skim over, or even less. I find the article written by Barbara is more useful for me. It tells me how to build a resume that employer would like to see step by step. Especially, the part of “objectively speaking” sweep my mind, the way one express his or her thoughts could also changes others’ impression about himself/herself. Fortunately, the education part of my resume seems close to the requirements she suggests. I realize that there are so many comments after the first article. The one professor chooses is very interesting. If the employer can think so, I would really appreciate that. I’m the person who owns useful skills and no working history.

Both articles talk about how recruiters evaluate the resume and give detailed information about how the resume should look like. However, after reading these articles I have a brief idea about how I should prepare my resume. For example, what I should include and where I should pay more attention to. I have heard many times how to build the resume but what was different about these articles was that these tell us about a good resume in recruiters' point of view. I agree with some of the parts but some are not. One of the article was saying that the working experience is the heart of the resume. I once again realized how important working experience is. Moreover, it was a good tip to know that we can include experience which does not related to the job that we are applying to because we can learn from any job. It was interesting to know that recruiters can google candidate's name to find more about him or her. On the other hand, I was shocked about how much time the recruiter spends on one resume. Compare to the time candidates spent on a resume 30 seconds seems too short. However, after reading these articles now I know how I should build my resume to look professional and also different from the others.

Yae Sam Song - Response 02

In both articles, “A Glimpse and a Hook” and “Build the Resume Employers Want”, put emphasis on the importance of the features of creating, finishing, and presenting a resume to the employer. Both of the articles are written by the people who have overwhelming experiences in reading resumes and evaluating them for a decision. While I was reading the first article, I was surprised of how much time the reader spends on a resume. It was only 30 seconds for each one. If one compares the effort and time a person spends on a resume, which is probably more than two weeks at least, it is discouraging to write one. However, I understand that there are a lot of stacks of them to read and that one has to make their resume stand out from the others. It is said in both articles that design and the way it is presented is essential. They say that they are flexible in the design and the template. The emphasis was on the resume to be prominent. There was another thing that surprised me. It is stated in both articles that having an own website could be beneficial for the candidate. I have not thought that they would google your name on the web.

In the two articles, there were two major disagreements that I found during the application process. The tone and the content of the article “A Glimpse and a Hook” seemed to be focusing on people who have already had experiences in work, where as the article “Build the Resume Employers Want” seemed to be focusing on the college students who are applying for a job. The second article focused on how the people looked at GPA and education, where as the first article did not mention anything about the GPA. In addition, the first article looks at the school name at last to eliminate prejudice. Another disagreement was that the first article showed how the objective was not very important, as they are not read. However, the second article puts emphasis on the objective, as it finds focus in what kind of person you are.

The articles were written from professionals, which gave me new information on how to create a resume. However, I am discouraged to write one because of the comparison of the time I put in and the time they put in to read a resume.

Yerzhan Konysbayev- Response 02

First of all, I would like to notice that it is obvious from two articles that every recruiter has his or her own approach and the way of going through resumes. The article "The glimpse and a hook" seems to be very honest. I always thought that people in human resources never read the whole resumes when they have hundreds or even thousands of them. I agree with the author of the article that recruiters like her ignore some statements especially when they provide with fewer facts like " objective statements".So, I can't say that something in the article shocked me, but it was helpful to know what sections of the resume I should be paying attention to when I will be applying for a job with many rivals. However, I think, what is true for that particular recruiter may not be true for others. For instance, she might only have 3 openings but 300 applicants, so she can afford to be a little careless. In other cases, when there are many openings and not that many applicants, human resources will try to pick the best candidates paying more attention to all details. Maybe that is why recruiters' opinions differ so broadly in two articles. For example, in " the glimpse and a hook" article the author claims that objective statement of a resume isn't important at all. On the other hand, in the "build the resume employer wants" experts to say that objective statements is one of the most important sections of a resume, comparing it "The objective is like a thesis statement for a term paper". To sum up, I want to stress that before one applies for a job, he/she should take into consideration all the facts that are available about the number of applicants and the number of available vacancies.

Mohammed Zulkernine - Response 2

The first article gave the point of views of one person who demonstrated the way he looks at candidates’ resume. The second article gave perspective of different people and the way they critique candidate’s resume. While I was reading through both the articles I came to know with many ignorant facts such as the importance of collecting all the activities or job experiences I had performed in my life whether they are relevant to my work or not. I have to be extremely concise and legible about all my information, not to get carried away by writing a lot of unnecessary information and also not to be disheartened if my Grade Point Average (GPA) is below 3.0 in college level. I felt anxious when I came to know that the employee of the first article emphasizes deeply on the unique qualities that a candidate possesses. Just a certificate from the reputed Purdue University would not be sufficient for me to get a job. I need to gather more experience and work in small firms to elevate my resume. By reading the second article I learnt the importance of putting all the information into paper. There is much information that could be left out by me or may not be organized properly while making the resume. The importance of organizational skills was greatly emphasized in the second article. Overall, by looking through both these articles I have realized the importance of time management and utilizing every moment to boost my resume and also using my time effectively. I learned that every simple productive work may result in something extremely fruitful in the future.
